SYNOPSIS

With the help of her “boomer” parents, Sophie takes the giant leap into the property market… but it’s all about the fine print.  And a global pandemic means a brand new deal.  Now Sophia and Greg (her “fiancé”) must live with Sophia’s parents as ‘downsizing’ bites and this reconstructed family are swamped by their own ambitions.  This play explores the property market, family life and the transactions that bind us.  This unlikely family must live together, as the cracks widen beneath them, threatening their hopes, their dreams… and their record collection!

A Simple Act of Kindness is a comedy for a generation who’ve been locked down with ones we.. love?

CHARACTERS

Sophia (25–40) · any gender

The daughter. Sophia has spent years scrimping, saving, and strategising her way toward a single goal: getting into the property market. The fact that this required inventing a fiancé is, in her view, a minor detail. Sharp, funny, and more self-aware than is comfortable, Sophia is the engine of this play — the person who wanted in, got in, and is now absolutely drowning. Physically and emotionally demanding.

Tony (50–65) · any gender

The father. A travel agent who has spent a whole life quietly absorbing the family’s disasters so no one else has to. Equal parts bluster and sentimentality, Tony has mortgaged everything — literally — in service of a version of fatherhood invented from scratch. Dreams of a house full of little Wayne Rooneys and is running out of time to make it happen. Physically and comedically demanding.

Julie (50–65) · any gender

The mother. Razor-sharp and utterly impossible in equal measure. Julie is opinionated, outrageous, and magnetic — the kind of person who fills a room before they’ve said a word and leaves it rearranged. Far more vulnerable than the performance lets on. A formidable comic presence who must also be capable of genuine devastation. Requires exceptional comic timing and emotional range.

Greg (25–40) · any gender

The part-time DJ and painter. Longlisted for the Archibald, perpetually running circles around a fertiliser factory, and somehow the most grounded person in the room. Greg came for the investment and left with a mortgage, a structural defect, and — somehow — a fiancée. Funny, generous, and sharper than anyone gives them credit for. Requires genuine charm and a gift for comedic timing.
