ABOUT THE PLAY

Tom Good is having a mid-life crisis thanks to turning the ripe old age of 40. He and his wife Barbara make the unusual decision to leave their middle class lifestyle and become completely self-sufficient. They grow their own fruit and veg, keep livestock in the backyard, make their own clothes and even generate their own electricity from manure.
It’s the good life for them – but not for Margo and Jerry Leadbetter, who live next door, and are desperately trying to maintain the status quo of their fancy suburb of London. This recent, witty sitcom revival taps into issues that resonate now more than ever. The characters get themselves into and out of hilarious situations
with warmth, generosity and fun and will delight audiences of all ages.

CHARACTERS
Accent required for all main characters is Standard British English. The supporting character roles could be enhanced using a variety of UK accents such as Cockney, Northern, Scottish, Welsh, Irish etc.
TOM GOOD (Playing age: 30-45) (main role)
Tom is married to Barbara and has a lot of energy and cheerfulness. He often appears clumsy and somewhat oblivious but has a good heart.
BARBARA GOOD (Playing age: 30-45) (main role)
Barbara is like a ray of sunshine with her quick wit and positive attitude. She is a strong-willed woman who is very independent.
MARGO LEADBETTER (Playing age: 30-45) (main role)
Margo loves all the perks associated with having a husband with a good income. She usually has an unflappable, pretentious air although she can be undone if she does not get her own way! She is a bit of a snob!

JERRY LEADBETTER (Playing age: 30-45) (main role)
Margo’s husband Jerry likes to play golf and keep his wife happy. He is a good friend to Tom, is likeable and loves a drink!
SIR aka ANDREW FERGUSON (Playing age: 50 plus) (supporting role)
Sir has a fake bonhomie about him. He loves to play golf and win. Everyone at work does exactly what he says.
FELICITY FERGUSON (Playing age: 40-50) (supporting role)
Sir’s wife is slightly ditzy and fey. She seems to be mostly in her own world.
MARGARET, MARY, MILKWOMAN (any age) (supporting roles to be played by the same person)
Margaret is Sir’s enthusiastic secretary. Mary is Dr Joe’s helpful receptionist. She
is jolly but slightly eccentric. Milkwoman is quick-tempered but also helpful.
HARRY the pigman, DR JOE, POLICEMAN (any age) (supporting roles to be played by the same person)
Harry is large, jolly, red-faced, dirty and a hash smoker. Dr Joe also plays golf and he is not a vet. The Policeman is also charmingly helpful and perhaps a bit of a catch?
